Craving some fudge? Need a cold beer on a hot (or semi-warm) summer day? Head downtown to the heart of Mackinac Island.
Your first experience of Mackinac City will be coming off the wonderful Shepler’s Ferry and straight onto a horse-drawn carriage to Mission Point. Mackinac Island does not allow any motor vehicles to operate on the roadways during the summer (but there are snowmobiles in the cold, snowy winter). There are plenty of options to get around: walking, bicycling, or the horse-drawn taxis. Remember to bring cash since the horse-drawn taxis do not accept any other form of payment. Adventurous wedding guests can even hire their own horse for a day!
There’s plenty to see and do in the heart of Mackinac Island. Ryba’s Fudge (and ice cream) offers a sweet treat to all who enter. The Yankee Rebel Tavern is a cozy eatery right off Lake Shore Drive with amazing daily specials. Windermere Point offers access right out to Lake Huron from a rocky beach and is popular for kite flyers and dog walkers. In need of a late-night meal? Island Slice Pizzeria is the place to go, serving up or delivering hot and fresh pizza until 3:00am! Doud’s Market is the grocery store and liquor store on the island and they are open late!
Most important of all, Mission Point Resort is the venue for our wedding. Located on the far eastern point of the south side of the island, Mission Point is split between the Main Lodge and the Straits Lodge. It is about a half-mile walk into town, but it is mostly flat and absolutely worth the sight seeing to stroll along and take in the beauty of the private homes on Mackinac Island’s southern shore. There are 3 restaurants: Chianti (open only for dinner, serving Italian and Mediterranean classics), Round Island Bar & Grill (open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with beautiful seating overlooking Lake Huron), and Bistro on the Greens (a place for lunch and dinner, overlooking the pitch and putt golf coast and Lake Huron with outdoor table seating and fire pits for those chilly Northern Michigan evenings). Also at Mission Point is the Boxwood Coffee Shop and Cafe, serving fresh coffee drinks and light sandwiches and pastries, which is open daily from 7:00am - 10:00pm.
